High-Tech in ordinary of health

Innovative competence centre at the Klinikum rechts der Isar in Munich. Many people talk about it, but at the newly founded Sylvia Lawry Centre for Multiple Sclerosis Research in Munich it is acted: here modern information technology, statistical methods and medical know-how are merged to an extremely fruitful symbiosis. The innovative-friendly climate of the high-tech region Munich and the technical competence of the spin-off company Trium Analysis Online GmbH made it possible.
The research centre founded at the Institute for Medical Statistics and Epidemiology (IMSE) at the TU Munich at the beginning of February goes new ways in MS research. Due to the use of modern information technology and innovative statistical methods, it will not be necessary anymore in the future to execute ethically problematic, time-consuming and expensive placebo trials for the development of new medicine. Thus, the development of medicine for multiple sclerosis patients - their number is estimated to 2,5 million worldwide - will be faster, cheaper and more effective in the future.
After Trium had got the invitation to participate in the application process because of its company profile the establishment of the research centre in Munich was possible. The centre was as initiative by the Multiple Sclerosis International Federation (MSIF) and is financed from international contributions.
Besides the personality of the scientific director of the Sylvia Lawry Centre, Prof. Dr. Albrecht Neiß, the excellent informatics concept, which had been developed by the company Trium in tight cooperation with its university partner IMSE, was a reason for the award. Tailor-made informatics solutions for the health care sector are the strengths of the young Munich company, which was established as spin-off company of the Institute for Medical Statistics and Epidemiology by Dr. Martin Daumer and Dipl.-Stat. Michael Scholz two years ago.
Both young entrepreneurs do not only have a solid scientific education but also long-time experience in developing medical user services. The tight connection to the to the medical and statistical research of the university guarantees results of the latest state of science. Trium coaches diplomas and theses in the fields of informatics, statistics and medicine. Dipl. Phys. Martin Daumer, graduated mathematician and managing partner of the company Trium Analysis Online GmbH, is very satisfied with the fruitful co-operation.: "Due to our ideal location we can offer our clients professional services with the highest quality of research. This is especially important for projects with high and complex data or time-critical supervision tasks."
The "Trium Clinical Trials Engine", an ASP model to save time and money in dealing with clinical trials, was developed for customers from the pharmaceutical industry and clinical research. "Trium CTG Online" - an internet-based delivery room monitoring system including an intelligent alarm system - is developed for gynaecological departments and private practices. "The combination of the three main competences medicine, statistics and informatics is one of our most outstanding strengths", biostatistician Michael Scholz explains.
Trium is a spin-off company which pursues the strategy of an independent and organic growing with the support of the high-tech-offensive of the Bavarian Ministry of Economics. Together with its university partner IMSE, Trium had realised many research projects during the last two years, from which several international patent applications resulted. The project "Online Monitoring in Medicine" of the SFB 386 and the project "Pedigree Online" by order of the Hubert Burda foundation for cancer research are some examples. Within the promoting focus of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), Trium was asked in February 2001 to make an application with its leading project "Mobile Medical Monitoring".
The Sylvia Lawry Centre for Multiple Sclerosis Research, the latest success of the strong team Trium and IMSE, will address itself to a challenging task in the service of health in the coming years!
